Description

“Silver sparks” is a Christmas chalkboard: white and silver drawings and lettering on a deep black ground. A horizontal piece assembled from dozens of small motifs.

What the picture shows

At the centre is a wreath of leaves and berries with the words Merry Christmas inside it. A garland of bulbs runs across the top of the canvas, with JOY and Ho Ho Ho! beneath it. Along the bottom stands a row of old houses with steep roofs and tall windows, next to the words Let it SNOW. Scattered around are baubles, snowflakes of different sizes, bells, deer, a candy cane, a Christmas stocking, a snowman, a bow, a bird in a little cap and berry sprigs. All the drawing is thin and linear: the beads follow contours over the black canvas, which is exactly why the work reads as real chalk. Ten bead colours are enough because the palette is deliberately restrained — white, silver, pearl and a little clear. The large beads and fifty bicones add separate bright sparks.
