Description

“Visiting the Dwarfs” shows a Christmas gnome in a tall red cap in the middle of a snowy fir forest. The scene is warm and story-like, with a lantern, a gingerbread house and falling snow.

What the picture shows

The gnome stands at the centre: a long white beard, a red cap whose tip curls above his head, and red clothes dusted with snow. A lantern with a lit candle stands on a stump beside him. All around are fir trees in different greens, hung with red baubles, gold stars and garlands; among them on the left a second, smaller gnome in a red cap peeks out. On the hill above, a house with brick walls and a snow-covered roof glows in its windows, smoke curling from the chimney. The sky is a soft turquoise green with white snowflakes drifting across it. Below are drifts with green sprigs, red berries and gold stars, and a red-breasted bullfinch sits on the left. Thirty bead colours are needed for the forest itself: the greens of the firs run from almost black to a light grassy tone.
