Description

“Koi red” is the same Eastern motif of a carp and lotus flowers, this time in a warm key: a muted crimson-red ground and copper-gold contours.

What the picture shows

The background shifts from pinkish terracotta at the top to deep crimson below, with faint streaks like dyed silk. The carp is laid out in copper and gold beads: a long curving body, a spread tail and fine scales along its whole length. To its left is a round lily pad with radiating veins. Lotus flowers open at the bottom: a large bloom in the centre with a heavy gold heart, slimmer buds on stems beside it, and a half-closed flower on the right. The petals are drawn with lines of beads and the red canvas stays open between them, which is exactly why the drawing looks light rather than heavy. Five bead colours are enough, because the whole work is built on shifts of copper, bronze and gold over a single warm ground.
