Description

“Koi blue” is a golden koi carp above lotus flowers on a deep blue ground. A narrow vertical canvas in an Eastern key, where everything rests on the contrast of two colours: blue and gold.

What the picture shows

The background is a saturated blue that shifts from near turquoise to dark ultramarine, like a depth of water. The carp swims across the upper part: its body is laid out in gold beads along the contour and the scales, its fins and tail opening into a wide fan. To the right a round lily pad unfolds with copper-orange veins. The whole lower third is taken up by large lotus blooms drawn in gold lines over the blue: petals, stems and buds stay as openwork outlines, while the largest flower has a heart packed solid with gold. The effect comes from beads following a line rather than filling everything: the blue canvas shows between the gold contours and gives the work its depth. The kit holds only five bead colours, so the drawing reads graphically, almost like silk painting.
