Description

“Rainbow dance” shows two betta fish with luxuriant fins circling in dark water. A rainbow palette on a grey ground, with bubbles all around.

What the picture shows

The larger fish turns upwards: the body is blue and emerald, while the tail and fins spread into a wide fan that shifts from turquoise through violet into crimson and orange. The smaller one is worked in warm coral, red and gold tones and swims towards it. The fins are stitched in radiating lines of beads, so the texture recalls folds of fabric. Bubbles rise around them, each laid out in a circle with an iridescent highlight. The dark grey canvas is left unstitched, and against it the colours sound loudest. Thirty-four bead colours and eleven colours of Preciosa No. 13 microbeads carry these gradients, while the glass bicones add sparkle. Together the fish form an oval turned along the diagonal of the canvas, and bubbles of different sizes are scattered above and below, so the composition carries a sense of moving water. The grey ground around them stays empty.
