Description

“Rain for lovers” shows a couple under an umbrella in a many-coloured downpour. The whole piece is built on the contrast between a black silhouette and streams of colour.

What the picture shows

Vertical runs of colour cross the canvas from top to bottom: blue, turquoise, green, yellow, crimson, violet, as if someone had melted a box of crayons. The runs are worked as columns of beads of different lengths, with splashes and droplets to the sides. At the centre, in a pale clearing, stands the black silhouette of two lovers: he holds the umbrella, they embrace and lean towards each other. Silhouette and umbrella are stitched densely in black beads with no inner detail, so they read as a shadow. A dark grey band of pavement lies along the bottom, scattered with dark beads. Seventeen bead colours carry the entire palette of this downpour. The runs vary in thickness and length: some reach the very bottom, others break off halfway, which keeps the rain alive. The clearing around the couple is almost white, and it is what brings the silhouette forward.
