Description

“Cascades of pearl” shows a dragonfly with turquoise wings above a symmetrical mandala. The white ground and the pearly shifts of colour keep the piece light and airy.

What the picture shows

The wings open horizontally, moving from blue and turquoise at the edges into lilac and pink closer to the body, and are filled inside with a fine pattern of pale beads. Body and head are worked in crimson, purple and violet. Below the wings unfolds a second, ornamental pair — part of the mandala, where orange, coral, blue and lilac scrolls meet; drop-shaped pendants hang from underneath it. The background is white and stays bare canvas, with no extra colour at all. Twenty-six bead colours produce the very pearly cascades the piece is named after. The composition is strictly symmetrical about the vertical axis, and small golden and coral scrolls run out into the corners to close the pattern. The piece is light and almost weightless.
