Description

“Saffron overflow” shows a large dragonfly with saffron wings against a bronze ornament. A warm ochre palette on dark grey canvas.

What the picture shows

The wings span the full width of the piece and shade from deep orange at the edge to honey and lemon near the body; pale dotted lines of tiny beads run along the veins, and clear accents like dew drops are scattered across the wings. The body is long and golden yellow, with dark eyes. Behind the dragonfly unfolds a symmetrical baroque ornament stitched in copper and bronze beads — it holds the composition together like a medallion. The finest tracery in the corners is printed on the canvas in light grey and left unstitched, so the beadwork is concentrated where the shine belongs. Seventeen colours give the smooth gradient inside each wing. The composition is strictly symmetrical: the dragonfly sits exactly in the middle, and the ornament repeats its shape above and below like a reflection. The corners of the canvas stay dark and quiet.
