Description

“Lamp evening” is a garland of light bulbs hanging on threads right below a night skyline. Warm light on a dark grey ground, with nothing superfluous in it.

What the picture shows

Along the top runs the silhouette of a city: the towers are marked by rows of gold, silver and pale blue dots, like windows switched on. Thin threads run down from them, carrying bulbs of different sizes, from the smallest up to the large central one. The glass bulbs are worked in amber, honey and gold beads with a brighter spiral inside, and the caps are silvery grey. Drops of light are scattered between the lamps. The dark grey canvas is left unstitched, so the lights read especially clearly. Glass rondelles, hemispheres and sequins add sparkle where the light should be densest, and the decorative metallic thread shimmers along the hanging cords. The bulbs hang at different heights, from just below the city down to the lower edge of the canvas, so a lot of dark space is left between them. The largest bulb in the centre is the main one, both in size and in the composition.
