Main Bead Embroidery Kit Night in the city

“Night in the city” is a night skyline built out of lit windows alone. There are no buildings as such: they are drawn by the darkness between the lights.

What the picture shows

A cluster of towers rises out of the black ground, each marked only by rows of tiny bright dots. The central tower glows warm yellow and gold, the neighbouring ones in lime, turquoise, blue, crimson and pink; towards the bottom the lights thin out and scatter into single beads, as if the city were dissolving into the dark. Behind the towers a grey halo is printed on the canvas, standing in for the glow above the centre. The canvas stays black and matte — only the windows shine, which is why the piece reads like a panorama seen from above. Nine colours of Preciosa No. 13 microbeads make up the smallest lights. The lights are arranged in tiers: the tallest towers in the centre, lower buildings to either side, and the most distant towers marked only by narrow vertical strips of pink and lilac. Together the silhouette forms a soft arc.
