Description

“Black Pegasus” is a stylised horse whose mane curls into a whirl of ornamental scrolls. A small foal, drawn the same way, follows it at the lower right.

What the picture shows

The horse is shown in profile, ears sharp and neck lifted high; head, neck and mane are built from large spirals and paisley shapes laid in black, dark brown, copper and bronze beads — the metallic finish in the glass plays clearly in the light. The whole right-hand side is a white and grey whirl in which pale lines of beads follow the movement of the mane and pick up the little foal. The palette is deliberately narrow, only eight bead colours, but the count of beads is high, and it is the density of the stitching that gives the piece its graphic clarity. The composition unwinds along a spiral: the eye starts at the horse's head in the upper right, travels along the curls of the mane to the left and drops down to where the wave coils. That is why the piece feels in motion, even though there is not a single realistic detail in it.
