Description

“Garnet totem” is a profile portrait of an eagle owl against a lacy dreamcatcher web. The bird looks aside and the whole mood is quiet, almost nocturnal.

What the picture shows

The owl's head and chest are worked in grey, silver, white and smoky lilac beads; the feathering is laid in short stitches, so the texture comes out soft and alive. The ear tufts are raised, the beak is dark, and the large amber-yellow eye with its black pupil is the only warm spot in a cool palette. Behind the bird spreads the white netting of a dreamcatcher, stitched as separate strands of beads, along with thin pale lines running across the grey-pink ground. The background itself stays as print on the canvas, so the beads build volume exactly where it is needed. Four colours of Preciosa No. 13 microbeads go into the smallest details of the plumage. The head takes up almost the full height of the canvas and sits to the left, leaving room on the right for the pale web — and that is what keeps the composition in balance.
