Description

“Flower of the East” is a symmetrical lotus mandala on a white ground, built from fine lace-like lines. A meditative subject: the longer you look, the more small details you find.

What the picture shows

At the centre sits a teardrop core in yellow and golden orange beads; around it open petals of crimson, red and pink, then blue and violet rays, while the outer ring is laid in turquoise and mint. The shape is symmetrical about the vertical axis, with drop-shaped pendants along the edges. The finest tracery of lines is printed on the canvas in pale turquoise — beads cover the petals and the contours themselves, and nine colours of Preciosa No. 13 microbeads make it possible to follow the smallest curls. Five glass hemispheres in two shapes add raised, glinting accents. The upper part of the mandala is drawn out and reads as a lotus petal, while the lower part unfolds in symmetrical tiers, so the figure feels light despite the saturated colours. A wide margin of clean white is left all around.
