Description

“Velvet poppies” is a scatter of red poppies on a black chalkboard covered with white chalk lettering. The mood is a flower-shop window: saturated petals glowing against a deep dark ground.

What the picture shows

Five large blooms open on thin green stems, with one more bud just taking colour at the lower right. The petals run from deep crimson through scarlet to orange and almost yellow near the base, so the flowers look lit from inside; the hearts are black with small green seed pods. Stems and narrow leaves are laid in thin lines of green beads. The chalk words Poppy, Bloom and Flower Market and the scrolled corner frame stay as print on the canvas — beadwork covers only the flowers, and it is the contrast between matte chalk and glossy glass that holds the picture together. The composition is asymmetric: the flowers shift to the right and upwards while the lower left corner stays empty, which gives the piece plenty of air.
