Description

“Holiday cats” shows four kittens in knitted hats lying in a row on a white ground, with the words Merry Christmas below them. It is the simplest and warmest subject in the winter series.

What the picture shows

The cats are all different: a grey tabby, a white one with a grey back, a white one in a red scarf, and a ginger. The hats are beaded in red, green and white stripes, with turned-up brims and pompoms. The faces are worked in tiny beads: closed eyes, pink noses and long white whiskers that run beyond the silhouettes. All four lie on a thin horizontal line, as if on a shelf, with their paws hanging down. The lettering is beaded in green and red, the letters rounded and glossy. The white background is almost free of detail and stays as print on the canvas, with single pale beads scattered over it like snow. With fewer than two thousand beads, the piece stitches up quickly.
