Description

“Floral trail” is a still life of perfume bottles and flowers: several crystal flacons of different shapes stand among pink and red blooms. The subject is vintage, like a dressing table from the early twentieth century.

What the picture shows

The bottles are beaded in clear, silver and lilac tones with gold and dark stoppers; the darkest one carries a printed label. Red and pink flowers on green stems rise on both sides, a large pink chrysanthemum with a yellow centre lies in the middle, and lilac hydrangea and small violets sit beside it. Glass bugle beads add facets and shine to the flacons, while the finest beads draw the cut pattern in the glass. The background — light watercolour with pink, blue and yellowish washes — stays as print on the canvas, so the beaded objects look solid in that soft light. The flacons differ in height and shape, and that uneven line is what makes the still life feel lived-in rather than staged.
