Description

“Cat and moth” shows a cat sitting upright in profile, watching a small moth that flutters to its right. A round white moon marked with spirals shines above it.

What the picture shows

The cat’s body is assembled from fine pattern: red, white, green and ochre rosettes, paisleys and circles beaded one at a time, like Indian fabric. The contours, chest and paws are stitched in white pearly beads, and the whiskers run as long straight lines. The moth is golden red, and its trail is a thin curl of tiny beads. A wide white-and-red band of ornament runs along the bottom, where the cat sits and where its striped tail comes to rest. The dark grey background stays as print on the canvas, so the pale pattern reads like lace laid out on a dark ground. The moon in the upper left is beaded in white circles with spiral curls inside, echoing the pattern on the cat’s body.
