Description

“Yugen” is a Japanese landscape assembled from several signature images: a red torii gate, a tiered pagoda, the snowy peak of Fuji and a red sun in the sky. The whole picture is built on the contrast of grey monochrome and pure red.

What the picture shows

The sun is a solid red disc beaded in a spiral, and it is the brightest spot in the work. On the left, large red flowers with pointed petals rise beside grey-white leaves and buds. The torii below is stitched in saturated red with a black beam across the top. The pagoda, the mountains and the foam of the wave stay in a grey, almost watercolour range with silver and white accents, while small red petals scatter across the whole canvas. Part of the background is left as print, so the beaded areas step forward and read as relief against the misty ground. Twelve bead colours across eight thousand beads mean the piece rests not on a wide palette but on a clear drawing and strong contrast.
