Description

“Lotuses at sunset” shows a thicket of lotus flowers in evening light: several open blooms on tall stems, broad leaves and curling tendrils winding between them. The mood is warm and a little sleepy, like a pond just before dusk.

What the picture shows

The petals are beaded in coral-orange and pink with pale tips, and the centres are yellow and gold. Stems and leaves are stitched in several shades of green, from fresh lime to deep grass, while the thin spiral tendrils are worked in single stitches and look almost transparent. The background — a blurred sunset sky mixing lilac, peach and greyish green — stays as print on the artist canvas, with a warm sandy band along the edge, like a picture inside a picture. Beadwork covers only the flowers and foliage, which is why they step forward from the soft painted ground. A few buds are still closed and stand as separate verticals among the leaves, balancing the open blooms.
