Description

“Royal gaze” is a large woman’s eye in close-up, with a peacock feather growing out of it instead of lashes. The look is direct and calm, and everything else in the picture is colour moving around it.

What the picture shows

The iris is beaded in two halves: warm amber-orange on one side, cool blue on the other, with a black pupil and a white highlight. The upper lid and the brow break into a splash of blue, violet and turquoise beads, like spray. A long peacock feather runs downwards in emerald, cobalt and aquamarine barbs, with the eye of the feather and its blue-and-red centre near the bottom. The light grey background is almost free of detail and stays as print on the canvas. All the beadwork is concentrated in the eye and the feather, so the colour sounds especially loud, with small pale stars scattered across the ground like sparks. The lower lashes continue into the feather and turn into thin curved lines that coil near the left edge of the canvas.
