Description

“Good gift” is the head of a bison looking straight at the viewer, with ears of wheat instead of a mane and beard. The image reads as a thanksgiving for the harvest: the strength of the animal and the bread gathered in one silhouette.

What the picture shows

The muzzle is beaded in wheat gold, ochre and dark brown, the horns are pale and curved, the eyes outlined in dark tones. A light geometric ornament sits on the forehead like a stitched sign, with rays rising above it. Long heavy wheat ears hang down from the muzzle, each grain beaded separately, so they really do look grainy and raised. The background — a pale olive-beige glow with thin white rays spreading from the centre — stays as print on the canvas. That is why the beaded head looks lit from behind, as if against the sun. The ears also spread sideways, so the silhouette grows wider than the head itself and begins to read as a wreath. More than nine thousand beads in fourteen colours mean dense, almost solid coverage.
