Description

“Рion-2” is a large cream flower filling almost the whole canvas against a ground of old timber. The mood is calm and warm, the palette close to monochrome.

What the picture shows

The peony is fully open: broad wavy petals tuck behind one another in several tiers, and at the centre sits a dense core of brown and gold beads, the darkest and most raised point of the piece. The petals are not beaded solidly: the beads follow the outlines and the veining in cream, white, pale pink and sand, while the petal surfaces themselves stay as print on the canvas, so the flower keeps its soft painterly transitions instead of flattening out. The background is vertical boards in a warm grey-brown with visible wood grain; it is left unbeaded too and acts as a quiet support for the pale bloom. The palest petals gather at the top of the bloom, while those below fall into shadow with a warm grey-beige cast. Small pink beads appear only along the petal edges and add a barely noticeable touch of colour.
