Description

“Night flowers” shows three dark red roses hanging downwards against a grey-blue night and white lacy rosettes. The piece is striking and distinctly evening in mood.

What the picture shows

The blooms are turned head down: their densely stitched petals are worked in shades of red, from almost black cherry to bright scarlet, while the green sepals and stems reach upwards. A fringe of bead threads, glass bugles and pearls hangs from each flower, ending in teardrop pendants; these strands are not stitched down flat and swing freely above the canvas, which gives the piece an almost jewellery-like quality. Large white mandalas of fine pale beads are scattered along the edges, like frost on glass. The background is a muted grey-blue with vertical streaks and stays as print on the canvas, so the red flowers and the white lace hold all the attention. The pendants differ in length from flower to flower, so the fringe descends in steps and picks up the elongated format of the canvas.
