Description

“The night shone” is a crescent moon built out of yellow flowers against a deep blue night sky. The piece is bright and fairy-tale-like despite its nocturnal subject.

What the picture shows

The crescent is not filled solidly but stitched as a floral garland: narcissi, small star-shaped blossoms and buds in shades of yellow, cream and gold are worked bead by bead and give a clearly felt relief. Inside the crescent a pale haze with tiny stars is left — mostly printed, with beads lighting up only its edges. Pink bellflowers hang from the top edge on slender stems, and across the whole ground are scattered yellow stars, snowflakes and constellation lines stitched in thin bead threads that run from top to bottom. The background is deep blue shading into turquoise; it stays as print, which is why the yellow flowers glow against it so strongly. The flowers cluster most densely at the lower horn of the crescent and thin out towards the upper one, so the moon shape stays light. Among the stars are small snowflakes stitched in clear and silvery beads.
