Description

“Cadence-3” is the sparest part of the series: a thin new moon on a deep blue ground.

What the picture shows

The crescent curves in a steep arc across the centre of the canvas, leaving a great deal of empty space around it. It is worked mainly in golden and copper beads that grow finer and thin out towards the tips of the horns, so the light seems to fade and the shape dissolves into darkness. Along the inner edge, paler cream and near-white beads are scattered together with a few blue ones, giving a sense of shimmer. Nothing else appears on the canvas: the even ultramarine ground stays as print and takes up most of the surface. That makes the piece quick to stitch yet striking to look at — everything rests on one clean shape and the contrast of blue with gold. The crescent varies in width: it is thickest in the middle of the arc and tapers almost to nothing at the tips. A few turquoise beads along the inner edge echo the colour of the ground.
