Description

“Cadence-2” is the second part of the lunar series: the disc is shown half lit, with the bright side turned to the left.

What the picture shows

The half-moon has a straight, even cut and a convex outer edge, which gives the shape something of a sail. The surface is worked in the same warm beads — sand, copper, gold and cream — while the brightest craters are laid in rings of white and yellow beads, so they stand clearly above the rest. Fine microbeads fill the gaps and make the surface grainy, close to real lunar soil. Cooler turquoise beads appear nearer the cut edge and take a little heat out of the overall tone. The ultramarine ground stays clean, with no beading at all, and works as the night sky: half the canvas is empty, which makes the shape read even more sharply. Along the straight cut the beads line up evenly, so the border between light and shadow looks sharp, as in a telescope photograph of the moon. It is the quickest piece in the series to stitch.
