Description

“Cadence-1” is a full moon laid out in beads on saturated blue canvas. It is the first part of a series, the one where the disc is shown whole.

What the picture shows

The circle takes up almost the full width of the piece and is worked in fine beads in warm shades — sand, copper, gold and cream — with occasional white and pale blue beads mixed in. Light craters surface in several places, laid in concentric rings so they carry a faint relief and catch the light at a different angle from the rest of the surface. Cooler turquoise flecks appear closer to the rim, so the disc never looks flat. The ground is plain ultramarine canvas with no beading at all: it is precisely the contrast of warm gold against cold blue that holds the composition together. The palette is deliberately restrained, only a few bead colours, so the work rests on texture rather than colour. Along the rim the beads sit more densely than at the centre, so the circle keeps a crisp outline and a faint glow around its edge.
