Description

“Selena`s dance” is a black-and-white lunar mandala: a crescent at the centre, a full moon above and below, and lacy rosettes all around. The mood is nocturnal and slightly mystical.

What the picture shows

The composition is strictly symmetrical. At its heart is a densely beaded black floral wreath with a pale crescent set inside it, patterned with fine ornament. Eight round rosettes are scattered around it: some stitched in black, others in silvery white, and together they build a rhythm close to snow crystals. Above and below, a full moon with craters appears — it stays mostly as print on the canvas, with beads picking out only its edges. The palette is limited to a few tones: black, graphite, silver, pearl and white. The fine microbeads give a hoarfrost effect and catch the light on the dark canvas, while large areas of the ground are deliberately left bare. The rosettes vary in size — larger near the centre, smaller towards the corners — which keeps the composition from looking flat.
