Description

“Bunfa`s fresh coolness” is a mountain landscape shaped like a maple leaf: a snowy summit, a mirror-still lake and autumn forest all around.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a twin-peaked rock capped with snow, stitched in white and silvery blue, and behind it a bright turquoise sky fills the upper points of the leaf. Below, the conifer slopes darken, and along the waterline runs a band of autumn trees in warm copper, orange and yellow — these are the brightest patches and they carry the whole piece. At the bottom the lake reflects both the mountain and the shore: the water stays mostly as print on the canvas, while the beads pick out only the highlights and the foaming stretches near the rapids. The contrast of cool turquoise with warm copper is the main device here, and it makes the picture carry even at a small size. The snow on the summit is worked in white and pearl beads set in short uneven rows, so the slopes look freshly covered.
