Description

“The sun of Toscana” is an Italian landscape shaped like a maple leaf: a stone villa, cypresses and terraced hills gathered into one warm picture.

What the picture shows

A house with a terracotta roof stands on the slope at the centre, slim dark-green cypresses flank it, and beyond them the fields run downhill in bands of ochre, olive and grass green. The upper points of the leaf hold pale cream mountain ledges that almost merge with the sky. The lower edge is the most densely planted: white, pink, red and yellow blossoms are stitched bead by bead and stand clearly above the canvas, and beside them sits a large sunflower disc worked in fine gold beads. The beading falls in patches over the brightest areas, while the sky and part of the fields stay as print, so the picture never looks overloaded. The cypresses are stitched in the darkest green and act as vertical accents, splitting the composition into planes and leading the eye to the house.
