Description

“Fields of Provence” is a lavender landscape set into the shape of a maple leaf: the canvas is cut along the leaf outline and mounted in a wooden frame of the same shape.

What the picture shows

The foreground is filled with rows of lavender, from pale lilac to deep violet, with dark green bushes between them. Further back the field turns into gentle hills patterned with small plots, tiny houses and dark clusters of trees, while the upper points of the leaf keep a pale sky with light clouds. The beads are set as separate upright stitches, so the lavender heads come out rounded and shaggy and the greenery between them looks bristly. The sky and the distant slopes stay as print on the canvas: the beadwork thickens only where colour and shine are needed. The pale wood veneer around the piece adds warmth and works like a mount. The rows of lavender narrow towards the horizon, and that is what gives the piece depth despite its small format and unusual outline.
