Description

“New Paris” shows the same Eiffel Tower, only assembled from flat colour planes like a modern poster. The composition plays on overlapping simple geometric shapes and reads as design graphics rather than a city view.

What the picture shows

The blue openwork tower rises through the whole canvas and crosses a yellow rectangle and a red frame that stands in for the Arc de Triomphe. Wherever the shapes overlap the colour changes: violet, green, black and pink areas appear, and along the bottom small silhouettes of roofs, a dome and spires emerge. The pale pink background stays as print on the canvas, so the beadwork acts as a bright appliqué laid over it. The word PARIS runs across the top, each letter in its own colour. Beads are set in even horizontal rows, and even the lattice structure of the tower reads clearly thanks to the gaps left between the beaded areas. The palette is deliberately open: pure blue, lemon, red and black sit side by side with no half-tones. Towards the bottom the colours darken to black and violet, which gives the sense of an evening city gathered at the foot of the tower.
