Description

“New York City” is a graphic portrait of the city reduced to a handful of skyscraper silhouettes and built from clean, almost poster-like colours. The mood is light and contemporary: no detail, just the recognisable rhythm of towers and the words NEW YORK spelled out in multicoloured letters at the top.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical, the buildings standing in a tight group and overlapping one another like a collage. An ochre-yellow silhouette with a spire rises on the left, a pink tower with a thin antenna dominates the centre, and beside it stand red, blue, lilac and emerald-green shapes. Along the bottom a mottled band of low-rise blocks cuts across the silhouettes, and this is where the colours mix most freely. The background stays pale ivory and is not beaded at all, which is exactly why the beaded towers read so sharply. Beads run in dense vertical rows, so the texture itself suggests the height of the buildings. Each letter of the title is stitched in its own colour. Each skyscraper keeps one flat colour with no shading, so the silhouettes stay apart even where they stand edge to edge.
