Description

“Gold in silver” shows a white peacock whose long tail falls downwards like a lace gown, against a dark ground with a pale moon.

What the picture shows

The bird stands in profile at the top of the composition: a slender neck, a small crest, silver-white beads over the whole body. From it spreads the broad tail that fills most of the canvas. Every feather is laid in pale lines, and each one carries a gold eye at its centre, worked in honey and ochre beads; there are several dozen of these eyes, and they are what gives the piece its name. At the bottom the tail ends in long translucent strands with a bluish tint. The background is dark grey, with a large pale patch resembling a moon and a scatter of small light beads around the tail. That background stays as print — the beadwork runs over the bird alone.
