Description

“In the morning haze” shows a barn owl flying straight towards the viewer with open wings, beneath a branch of lilac blossom.

What the picture shows

The wings stretch across the full width of the canvas; the flight feathers are worked in rows of ochre, silver, lilac and deep blue beads, with clear dark bars along the edge. The pale heart-shaped face is stitched in white and pearl, with dark eyes. The tail hangs down and opens like a fan. Along the top a slender branch crosses the canvas, carrying dense clusters of blue-violet and pale blue flowers that resemble lilac; smaller sprays are scattered on the right. The background is a watercolour wash of grey, mint and pale turquoise with small white petals drifting across it. That background stays as print while the beads carry the bird, the branch and the blossom, so the owl steps forward out of the haze.
