Description

“Spirit” is a bird with outspread wings, woven out of light. The piece is almost monochrome: white, pearl and gold on a warm beige and smoky ground.

What the picture shows

The silhouette faces the viewer straight on: the wings rise in two wide arcs, while the flight feathers fall away in long wavy strands that curl into a large spiral near the bottom. The body and head are drawn with a fine pattern that looks like carving, and an openwork mandala halo of thin rays opens above the bird. The whole figure is worked in white, cream and gold beads laid in rows that follow the lines of the feathers, so the surface catches the light differently as you move. The smoky background with its soft washes stays as print on the artist canvas and never competes with the beadwork.
