Description

“Black Diamond” shows a black lion lying against a golden solar disc. The piece is almost monochrome and built on the contrast between deep black and the warm light behind it.

What the picture shows

The lion is seen in profile, forepaws stretched out and head raised. The mane and tail are worked as large decorative scrolls that recall carving or wrought iron rather than real fur. The body is filled with black beads carrying faint bronze highlights along the outline, while the open muzzle is drawn in warm gold. Behind the animal rises a large golden sun, sending a fan of sharp rays out to the right. The grey graphite background is broken by light bead strokes into small horizontal dashes, and the lower part is an even warm band of sand. The whole composition rests on silhouette and on the rhythm of those lines.
