Description

“Ammolite” is a close-up portrait of an owl assembled from every colour at once. The bird looks straight at the viewer, and it is that gaze which holds the whole composition together.

What the picture shows

The owl's face and chest fill the canvas completely — the edges of the plumage are never shown, which makes the portrait feel almost monumental. The feathers are laid in strokes of red, orange, yellow, emerald, turquoise and violet that flow into one another like paint on a palette. The beak is dark and sharp, the brows and facial disc are picked out in lighter beads, and the ear tufts point upwards. The large round eyes are amber-yellow with black pupils; in the kit these are separate decorative resin elements, so they come out glossy and alive against the matte beaded surface. The patches of colour around the head act as a vivid background.
