Description

“Walking in the sunset” shows the silhouette of a cat strolling against an evening sky, with a dense floral ornament blooming inside its outline. The whole piece rests on that contrast between a simple recognisable shape and a busy pattern.

What the picture shows

The cat is seen in profile, tail up, head turned attentively towards the viewer. Its silhouette is filled with a paisley-and-mandala pattern: fans of petals, spirals, daisies and teardrops in red, emerald, turquoise, yellow and lilac. The outline is worked in dark beads, which keeps the figure crisp and stops the small motifs from scattering. The background — watercolour sunset clouds running from peach and pink to lilac and pale blue — stays as print on the artist canvas, and against that soft ground the ornament reads as especially saturated.
