Description

“Beetles” lays out a whole collection of insects on a dark ground, like a display case in an entomology cabinet. Only the colours are pure invention rather than nature: turquoise, fuchsia, orange and emerald.

What the picture shows

Four large beetles anchor the composition — a stag beetle with long mandibles, a striped one with an orange-yellow abdomen, a rose chafer with violet-green wing cases, and another with a turquoise shell and long antennae. Smaller insects are scattered between them: flies with iridescent wings, a butterfly, a ladybird, and several beetles no bigger than a fingernail. Each insect is worked in rows of beads that follow the outline of its body, so the pattern on the backs reads like mosaic, while the legs and antennae are picked out in thin lines. The dark graphite background with its faint radiating pattern stays as print on the artist canvas and acts like the velvet lining of a display case.
