Description

“Halfmoon” is a golden halfmoon betta with a lavish veil tail that unfolds across half the canvas. The graphic swirling background makes the subject look like a Japanese woodblock print, only worked in beads.

What the picture shows

The head and dorsal fin are stitched in warm gold, orange and red, with a fine scale pattern running over the body. The tail and ventral fins are the opposite — cool white and pearl ribbons outlined in turquoise and emerald, pouring downwards in long waves and taking up most of the composition. The background is grey-beige, printed with spiral waves and shells in the corners; some of the swirls are picked out in light beads, so the ground keeps its own rhythm without competing with the fish. The composition is diagonal: the fish enters from the upper left and leads the eye down to the open fan of the fins.
