Description

“Golden beetle” places a large bronze insect with translucent wings above the water, with blue water lilies opening beneath it. The subject is decorative and slightly fairy-tale, like a plate from an old botanical album lit up with gold.

What the picture shows

At the centre sits the beetle: a golden-green thorax, dark striped elytra and wide open wings shimmering in green, olive and turquoise. Four water lilies are arranged in a circle below, their pointed petals moving from inky blue to lilac and pink, with warm orange-yellow centres. The quiet grey-turquoise water, with its white curls of foam and ripple rings, stays as print on the artist canvas, and golden specks are scattered across the top of it. Beadwork covers only the insect and the flowers, which is why they glow against the muted background.
