Description

“Shaman” shows a wolf's head face-on against a night sky with the northern lights. The colours are cold and the mood is ceremonial.

What the picture shows

The wolf looks straight at the viewer and its head fills most of the canvas. The fur is made not of separate hairs but of ornament: symmetrical feathers, curls and sharp wedges laid in white, turquoise, emerald and black beads, like a carved mask. The eyes are almond-shaped with dark rims and a pale highlight; the nose and cheekbones are picked out in the darkest tone. On the forehead sits a round rosette resembling a dreamcatcher, stitched in white microbeads; dimensional hemispheres, drops and bugle beads act as accents on that circle and along the muzzle. The background is a dark grey starry sky with mint-green bands of aurora, and a silhouette of fir forest runs along the bottom. Sky and forest stay as print on the canvas, and the beadwork covers the head itself, so it steps forward and looks almost sculptural.
