Description

“Balance” is a yin-yang symbol assembled entirely from lace-like patterns. The piece is black and white, with no colour at all, and lives on the play of textures.

What the picture shows

At the centre of the grey canvas lies a large circle divided by a wavy line into a light half and a dark one. Each is filled with mandalas, rosettes, diamonds and small ornamental nets, and no pattern repeats twice. The light half is worked in pearl, white and silver beads, the dark half in black and anthracite with a metallic sheen. Inside each half sits a small disc of the opposite colour, as the symbol requires. Round pearls of various sizes are scattered across the whole circle, catching the light and adding depth; bugle beads and microbeads carry the finer lines of the ornament. The plain grey background stays as print, so all the beadwork is concentrated in the circle itself, which stands proud of the surface like a single medallion.
