Description

“Flowers for your beloved” shows a bouquet of cream roses and violets against an old French label. The mood is tender and vintage, in a shabby chic key.

What the picture shows

The lower half of the canvas is taken up by large open roses — cream, white and pale peach with warm ochre hearts; the petals are laid in arcs of beads, so the flowers look rounded and soft. Clusters of violet and lilac pansies, small white blossoms and green-blue leaves crowd between them. Two butterflies with patterned wings, one lilac and one turquoise, sit at the left and near the top. The background is a faded pale lilac wall carrying antique French lettering — Maison C. Riffard, Paris and a house number — along with a faint plant ornament. That lettering and the wall stay as print on the canvas, and the beadwork covers only the flowers, leaves and butterflies, so the bouquet steps forward while the vintage label stays a light backdrop.
