Description

“Umbrellas” shows a heap of open umbrellas seen from above on a rainy day. The mood is bright and uncomplicated: here the rain is a celebration rather than bad weather.

What the picture shows

The canvas is narrow and tall, and the umbrellas fill it almost completely, overlapping one another. The largest are orange and yellow with warm shifts from gold to reddish; beside them sit blue and violet ones with white ribs, and further back lilac, raspberry and one more deep red. The ribs of every umbrella are drawn in pale lines of beads, so each canopy looks taut and rounded, and the tips at the top are marked with dark beads. Above the umbrellas a strip of city view is left: two tiny figures with umbrellas walk along wet cobblestones, their reflections spreading into the puddles. That part stays as print on the canvas, while the beadwork covers the canopies themselves — which is why they step forward and look almost glossy.
