Description

“Levitation” shows a woman in profile wearing a lavish ethnic headdress whose feathers stream backwards like a gust of wind. The title is accurate: the whole composition pulls up and to the right, like the instant of leaving the ground.

What the picture shows

The face is shown in clean profile, eyes closed and chin lifted; the skin and shoulder are stitched in warm golden-bronze beads with a pearly sheen. A wide fan of a headdress spreads back from the head: first dense rows of gold, white and amber with large honey-coloured insets, then sharp red and wine feathers veined with silver, and at the far end a cool blue and turquoise wave of long, winding strands. The kit brings many dimensional elements — bugle beads, hemispheres, bicones, leaves and pearls — so the headdress genuinely stands proud of the canvas. There are thirty-two bead colours, the richest palette in the range. The warm, nearly plain brown-ochre background stays as print, and against it the figure reads as one continuous glow.
