Description

“Origin of new moon” is a round ornamental design: a crescent moon holding a mandala. The subject is meditative, assembled from small repeating patterns.

What the picture shows

The composition sits inside a circle on a dark graphite ground. The left part is a broad crescent moon filled solidly with mandalas and geometric rosettes in green, emerald, turquoise and blue, dotted with white accents; every pattern is different, so the crescent reads as a mosaic of many small circles. Inside the crescent, on the free dark field, a large symmetrical mandala opens out in violet, lilac and pink with a black core and petal-like rays. Both parts are outlined with a thin turquoise line that holds the whole shape together. The fine details and the rosette centres are worked in microbeads, which is what makes the pattern genuinely intricate. The dark background stays as print on the canvas, and the coloured ornament reads especially clearly against it.
