Description

“Guidelines in this house” is an embroidered blackboard with a list of house rules written out by hand in “chalk”. It is a poster more than a painting — the kind you hang where the whole family gathers.

What the picture shows

The ground is deep black canvas with a faint matte texture. At the top, under a curling decorative flourish, runs a large heading, and below it fifteen numbered lines, each in its own lettering: printed capitals here, slanted handwriting there, one entry set inside a ribbon banner. At the centre is a big heart with words inside it, with two crossed arrows meeting beneath. The gaps are filled with small symbols — hearts, a sun, an exclamation mark, stars, curved lines and flourishes. All the lettering is stitched in white and silver beads and microbeads, so the lines come out thin and crisp, like real chalk. There are only seven colours: this is a nearly monochrome piece that lives on the contrast between pale writing and the black ground, which stays as print.
