Description

“Defender” shows a tiger's head against a solar disc, built almost entirely from shades of gold, copper and warm sand. The animal's gaze is calm and attentive rather than fierce — hence the name.

What the picture shows

The tiger is turned in profile and its head fills the left half of the canvas. The stripes, cheekbones and cheek fur are laid in short rows of beads of varying length, so the coat looks ruffled and alive; the whiskers and the long hairs around the muzzle are picked out in single stitches. Behind the head is a large circle stitched in white and silver microbeads as an openwork lace net — sun and halo at once. Rays of small gold and bronze dashes spread out from the circle in every direction and gradually dissolve into the warm ochre ground. There are only twelve colours, all of them neighbours in one warm range, from near white to dark brown. The background stays as print on the canvas, while the beadwork covers the muzzle, the circle and the rays.
